Cal began his music studies in Denver, taking piano, violin, organ, viola, and oboe lessons from any early age. He decided to study music while at Kalamazoo College, then went on to earn the master's and doctorate in organ performance at Northwestern University, where he studied with Karel Paukert. Through the Fulbright-Hays program and a French Government Grant, Cal studied with Xavier Darasse at the Toulouse Conservatoire.
His first full-time position was as Director of Music at First United Methodist Church of El Dorado, Arkansas. Cal has served as a substitute and interim organist at a number of metro Atlanta churches including FPC since 1986, and became FPC’s official organist in January 2006. His accomplishments include high-profile organ and harpsichord recitals throughout the United States and abroad, recording for several labels, and contributions to multiple volumes on organ performance.
