Officer Nominations
As stated in the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (Part II, Book of Order), a Ruling Elder should be a person of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit. His or her manner of life should be a demonstration of the Gospel, both within the Church and in the World.
The Office of Deacon, as set forth in Scripture, is one of compassion, witness, and service after the manner of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary life, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office.
As stated in the First Presbyterian Church Procedures for Electing Officers, a person being considered for church office should:
Be a person of faith, dedication, good judgment, and spiritual maturity who witnesses to their faith, by being a leader in worship, and in the spreading of the Gospel, both within the church and in the world.
Be a person who demonstrates stewardship of time and money, as well as regular church attendance, by participating in activities resulting in service to the church and the community by sharing of their time, talents, and resources.
Be a person who regularly contributes to the church’s General Fund.
Additionally, no member of the Nominating Committee may be nominated to the office of Ruling Elder or Deacon. No person shall be nominated to serve concurrently as a Ruling Elder with a member of that person’s immediate household. Deacons and youth officers may serve concurrently with another member of their household. Prior service as a Deacon is not considered to be a strict requirement for nomination as Ruling Elder. No ONC member or member of his or her household shall be nominated for Ruling Elder or Deacon.
