The Extension

“Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:8

The Extension is a non-profit, community-supported organization providing addiction treatment services to low income people within our community, including residential treatment for homeless men. In addition to the residential program, outpatient counseling services and various community outreach initiatives are offered. In fact, the organization began with a commitment to outreach by providing emergency shelter during the winter months.

From a humble beginning as a winter shelter, The Extension grew to become the largest provider of comprehensive addiction treatment services for homeless men and other low-income individuals in the north Metro Atlanta area. This is provided along with commitment to our community to provide emergency shelter to anyone on the coldest nights of the year. Addiction treatment services address the root causes of addiction, with a level of treatment tailored to an individual's needs.

Realizing that addiction has many ramifications, the goal of treatment is nevertheless simple: that those who come to The Extension for help never again depend on drugs to get the high or on charity to get them by. Addiction is viewed as a failure to live life on life's terms; therefore, recovery is more than just a matter of staying sober.

The comprehensive array of services provides all persons helped with the opportunity to overcome their addiction and to once again become accountable to themselves, their families, and our community. Men and women who previously abused drugs and alcohol - and in the process became burdens on our community through their criminal behavior and the costs of incarceration and their dependence on charity - now become responsible members of our community. The Extension's mission is to help the community by providing help to those in the community who need it most.

First Presbyterian Church has been involved since the inception of The Extension in 1988. Many have volunteered, and FPC has always had a member on the Board of Directors. FPC supports The Extension each year financially. Donations are always welcome and needed.
