About Why to Join a Church1

Although we associate church with a building, it’s much more than a place to worship!  A church is:

  • a community in which members are joined together to do God’s work; Christians unite to share love, hope and a sense of purpose;
  • a gathering of individuals who share a common belief and goal to show Christ’s presence in the world;
  • a place where you can discover your own faith, live it more fully and learn to love God, other people and yourself in an atmosphere of giving and receiving!

You may be surprised to know that “church” needs you!  As a unique human being, you have special God-given gifts to share.  Discovering your God-given talents is an important part of understanding why you are here and learning how God best intends for you to be of service in the world.  When Christians work together, the impossible becomes possible.

Although it is possible to be a Christian and not belong to a church, it is not the most effective way to nurture and grow your faith.   Solitary prayer and Bible study are important, but when Christians gather together, they can:

  • hear and understand God’s word more clearly and powerfully;
  • learn from one another in memorable and unique ways;
  • experience Christ’s presence as a group gathered in His name;
  • be an example to the larger world around them;
  • share God’s blessings and the trials of life;
  • be unified in service to God and others.

Remember, Jesus established the church!  He prayed that a community of faith would continue always (John 17:20 – 21).  Early Christians relied on the church, despite ridicule and persecution.  The church remained a source of strength and hope in a troubled word.  Today, Christians rely on the church too!  Although we do not fear death as a result of our faith, we do face persecution, frequently in the form of name-calling, temptation or disdain.

A church is like a family.  It is not perfect.  We must remember that church members are human – each with weaknesses and strengths.  We all struggle in our attempt to live as Jesus would.  Like families, membership takes work and commitment.  Everyone needs to be involved for a family to grow.  Each member has a responsibility to help the church thrive, too.  Just as in a family, each member of a church has something unique to offer.  Because we are all equal in the eyes of God, none of our gifts are too small to add to His glory!

Finally, like a family should work, you can expect the church will be a place where you can find acceptance, forgiveness, encouragement and renewal.  It’s a place where you can be supported through your joys, your changes, your stress and your losses.

We long to welcome you at First Presbyterian Church.  We also understand that selecting a church is a personal journey between you and God.  The best way to find a church home is to visit several services and social hours.  Observe and ask questions of church members and leaders.  Consider what you can give the church and pray to God for guidance and clarity.  Do not be afraid to try multiple churches until you find the right fit for you!  Finding the place that feels most like family, can sometimes take time.
